Tiles hold a special place in the world of home design so when it comes to choosing your wall or floor tiles, it may be difficult to know where to start. At Designer Tile Douglas we are happy to help you start your tiling journey.
Before you do start to choose your tiles think about the current interior of your home and ask yourself a few basic questions.
- What room/rooms are you considering tiling?
- Are the tiles for an indoor or outdoor space? Will you require non slip outdoor tiles?
- Are wall or floor tiles needed? Or maybe both?
- Where do you want to place these wall or floor tiles?
- Do you need these tiles to complement existing tiles or the existing design of your home/business?
Establishing your needs is our first tip when it comes to choosing your tiles and these answers will help you to do that.
Our second tip is to think about room size. The tile sizes of your floor and wall tiles can do wonders to change the perception of any room. Larger tiles make small rooms appear much bigger than they actually are. Grout lines are thinner and fewer as part of the layout so smaller rooms appear bigger when using larger tiles
Next, colour! Popular colours change with time so choosing the right colour tile for your wall or floor is important. So firstly, consider the purpose of the room to be tiled. Every room will have colours that work in one room but might not work in another. Maybe because there is more natural light in your kitchen than bathroom. Another useful tip is that small, dark coloured tiles make a space feel small. While large, light-coloured tiles open up spaces and make them feel bigger. A gloss tile is also a great option for a dark space as a gloss tile will reflect more light.
Neutral coloured tiles also act as perfect backdrop for furniture and décor. This is also important if you do decide to sell your home. Colour can make or break a room so be sure to have a good think about this one!
Don’t forget the importance of choosing the right grout colour. A contrasting grout will emphasise lines and the design, while a grout in a neutral colour will give the tile a subtle effect.
